My Story
Hi, I’m Joshua. I’m in my late 30s and have lived with atrial fibrillation (AFib) for years. I know firsthand how unpredictable, confusing, and sometimes frightening it can feel. Some days, my heart races uncontrollably. other times, it skips beats so suddenly I worry I might pass out. I’ve experienced fear, frustration, and helplessness , and I’ve learned that this experience can feel very lonely if you don’t have the right guidance. Outside My heart Issues,
I’ve worked hard to make positive changes in my life. I’ve been alcohol-free for over four years and smoke-free for more than 600 days. I also Live with anxiety, PTSD, sleep apnea, ADHD, depression, and chronic pain. All of these experiences shape how I live with AFib and give me a unique perspective on the challenges people face. My goal is simple:) to create a place where you can understand AFib, recognize symptoms, and feel empowered .not afraid when your heart acts up.
The Challenge
When I first started experiencing AFib, I felt completely unprepared. Every flutter, or skipped beat sent waves of panic through me. I would lie awake at night, listening to my heartbeat, wondering if something serious was happening. Having a comorbidity of atrial fibrillation alongside other health conditons means managing my heart rhythm is just one part of my overall health. These overlapping conditons affect each other, so treatment and daily life require careful balance and attention.
My Journey
Over time, I began to understand my heart better. I learned to track my symptoms, notice triggers, and recognize patterns. I discovered that stress, lack of sleep, and even simple things like caffeine could affect my heart more than I expected. But the real breakthrough came when I learned to manage the emotional side . Anxiety, fear, and the constant “what if” questions that came with each episode.I experimented with practical strategies Journaling symptoms, practicing calming exercises, and seeking support when needed. Some days I succeeded, others I struggled and that’s okay. Living with AFib isn’t about perfection! it’s about understanding your body and learning to adapt. I also realized an important truth, knowledge is power. The more I learned, the less Afib ruled my life, and the more confidence I gained in managing it day to day.
